Judge Ivana Hrdličková, a Czech national, began her career as a Judge in 1990 and has
presided over both civil and criminal cases in the Czech judiciary. She holds a PhD in
International Law, with a focus on the relationship between international and Islamic law,
from the law faculty of Charles University in Prague.
Judge Hrdličková has acted as Legal Expert for the Council of Europe on issues of human
rights, money laundering and terrorist financing. She is a specialist in the development of
the rule of law in post-revolution societies and in transitional justice and has participated
in a number of international legal and judicial projects, such as Euro-Mediterranean
Partnership (Euro-Med) efforts to increase judicial cooperation between the
Mediterranean-European Development Agreement (MEDA) countries, in order to strengthen
the independence of judges and support transitional justice initiatives. She has delivered
expert training to judges in various post conflict countries and has extensive experience
working in transitional judiciaries. She has participated in the ILAC-IBA-CEELI Institute
program for judges as an Expert Trainer, and is an active member of the International
Association of Women Judges, with particular focus on issues human rights, women rights
and digitalization of justice.
Judge Hrdličková was appointed as a Judge of the Appeals Chamber of the Special Tribunal
for Lebanon in November 2012. She was elected STL President on 19 February 2015 and
has served as President of the STL since 1 March 2015.
