Gabe Shawn Varges is Senior Partner at the international consulting firm HCM in their offices in Zurich and Geneva, and Lecturer at the University of St. Gallen Executive School. He advises boards of directors, senior management, and function heads on the more strategic and difficult aspects of corporate governance, compensation, and com-pliance, including for companies under investigation or under deferred prosecution agreements. He also serves as part of regulator-imposed Monitor Teams. Earlier he was Head of Governance of the Swiss combined banking and insurance regulator, where he supervised institutions on compensation, governance and compliance and represented the authority on various international regulatory bodies, including the FSB. Earlier he served as global Chief Compliance Officer of the Zurich Insurance Group and as lawyer at Shearman & Sterling. A graduate of Harvard, Mr. Varges has served on the board of various organizations, and is former President of the Association of Corpo-rate Counsel in Europe. At the University of St. Gallen he also serves as Director of Compliance Studies. His latest publications include “Governing Remuneration”, “Work-ing with the Chief Compliance Officer: A New CEO Skill”, and “Internal Governance”.
