BEIRUT — The head of Lebanon’s Hezbollah terror group on Friday called on the country’s central bank governor to resign amid mounting legal troubles. This is the first time a powerful terror group has called for Riad Salameh to resign in response to an arrest warrant issued by France for him on corruption charges.

In a televised speech commemorating the Israeli withdrawal from southern Lebanon in 2000, Hassan Nasrallah, the leader of the Iran-backed Hezbollah, stated that the governor, Riad Salameh, should either resign or be stripped of his duties.

A Lebanese judge questioned Salameh on Wednesday, and his French and Lebanonian passports were taken away as a result of an arrest warrant issued by France for him on corruption charges. He has two citizenships.

Salameh is effectively unable to travel abroad as a result of the development. Lebanon doesn’t remove its residents to far off nations or global courts.

We believe that there are two choices for Hezbollah. The first is for the governor to voluntarily step down, according to Nasrallah. He stated that the second option is for the judiciary to remove Salameh from his position and pursue legal action against him.
