According to ANI, US President Joe Biden has criticized the Ugandan president for signing into law tough new anti-gay legislation on Monday. While pummeling Yoweri Museveni, he considered it a “sad infringement of widespread common liberties”. In addition, he has requested its immediate repeal. “No one should have to live in fear for life or be subjected to violence and discrimination,” the US president has stated.

Uganda’s anti-homosexuality law The new law would impose a 20-year prison sentence for “promoting” homosexuality and the death penalty for certain actions, such as having gay sex while HIV-positive. According to the press briefing that was released by the US State Department, Biden criticized the new law and described it as a tragic violation of universal human rights that “is not worthy of the Ugandan people, and one that jeopardizes the prospects of critical economic growth for the entire country.”

“I join with people around the world, including many in Uganda, in calling for its immediate repeal,” he continued. Nobody ought to need to live in consistent apprehension for their life or being exposed to viciousness and separation. It is incorrect. Additionally, Joe Biden asserts that there has been an increase in reports of violence and discrimination against Ugandans who are or are perceived to be LGBTQI+ since the Anti-Homosexuality Act was enacted.

Biden criticized Yoweri Museveni’s decision regarding LGBTQI+ and stated that this shameful act has increased trends in corruption and human rights abuses. “I now encourage the duty bearers under the law to execute the mandate bestowed upon them in the Anti-Homosexuality Act,” read a tweet from Uganda’s Speaker of Parliament Anita Among. “The People of Uganda have spoken, and it is your duty to now enforce the law in a fair, steadfast, and firm manner,” she continued.
