Payel Chatterjee is a Senior Member of the International Litigation and Dispute Resolution Practice at the multi-skilled, research based international law firm, Nishith Desai Associates (www.nishithdesai.com) with offices in Mumbai, Silicon Valley, Bangalore, Munich, Singapore, New Delhi and New York. She is also an integral member of the Competition Law Practice at the firm. Ms. Chatterjee graduated from Gujarat National Law University, Gandhinagar and holds an Honors degree in B. Com LL.B. (Hons.). She is registered with the Bar Council of Delhi (2009).

She focuses on commercial arbitration, regulatory litigation, white collar investigations and has worked in a range of sectors and industries including corporate, IT, intellectual property, telecom, private equity, power projects, food and beverages, pharmaceuticals and several others. She has been involved in representing international clients in cross-border litigations and international commercial arbitrations as well as enforcement of foreign awards and judgments in India including successfully resisting enforcement in India of the USD 50 billion Yukos Oil arbitration award, the world’s largest arbitration award.

She has worked on some of the most challenging projects in financial services and regulatory sector, including representing investors in the biggest infrastructure investment by a consortium of private equity investors in power projects before SIAC and related anti-suit injunctions for stay of arbitral proceedings before various forums in India, including the Indian Supreme Court, representing investors and mutli-nationals in investigations on allegations of anti-corruption and bribery.

She regularly participates in domestic and international conferences and her articles have been published in several reputed legal journals on arbitration and competition law. She has also won the Inter-Pacific Bar Association Best Paper Prize in 2012 for an article on intellectual property law, “What’s in a name? John Doe arrives in India” and recently contributed a chapter on “Enforcement of Foreign Arbitral Awards- Public Policy and Arbitrability Considerations”- for the Book on Enforcement of Foreign Arbitral Awards published by Lexis Nexis, 2017.
